We continue our discussion on Magic Squares, specifically now, the magic patterns that tie to the Zodiac. Magic Squares of order 4 can be distinguished by the various patterns that occur when complement pairs of numbers adding to 17, (half of the magic sum) are paired.

For example consider the following 4 x 4 Magic Square.

When the numbers that add to 17 are “paired,” we the result is the figure below.

It turns out that there are 12 distinct Magic Patterns, each of these will later be identified with their own *Classic* Magic Square and will be named after a star constellations in the Zodiac.

*Aries*

**Magic Square**

**Magic Pattern**

The pairs lie in alternate columns along the diagonal of a 3 x 3 square.

**Example**

7 + 10 = 17, 9 + 8 = 17

*Taurus*

**Magic Square**

**Magic Pattern**

Pairs are symmetrical around the centre.

**Example**

15 + 2 = 17, 8 + 9 = 17

*Gemini*

**Magic Square**

**Magic Pattern**

The pairs lie in squares symmetrically on either side of the vertical middle.

**Example**

1 + 16 = 17, 7 + 10 = 17

*Cancer*

**Magic Square**

**Magic Pattern**

The pairs lie in squares diagonally opposite each other in each quarter.

**Example**

1 + 16 = 17, 11 + 6 = 17

*Leo*

**Magic Square**

**Magic Pattern**

The pairs lie in adjoining squares in adjacent columns.

**Example**

16 + 1 = 17, 12 + 5 = 17

*Virgo*

**Magic Square**

**Magic Pattern**

The pairs lie in alternate squares in alternate columns.

**Example**

4 + 13 = 17, 8 + 9 = 17

*Libra*

**Magic Square**

**Magic Pattern**

The pairs lie in squares symmetrically on either side of the vertical middle and in adjoining squares in adjacent columns.

**Example**

2 + 15 = 17, 14 + 3 = 17

*Scorpio*

**Magic Square**

**Magic Pattern**

The pairs lie in adjoining squares in adjacent columns, and in squares symmetrically on either side of the vertical middle.

**Example**

14 + 3 = 17, 2 + 15 = 17

*Sagittarius*

**Magic Square**

**Magic Pattern**

The pairs lie in squares symmetrically on either side of the vertical middle, and in alternate squares in alternate columns.

**Example**

1 + 16 = 17, 14 + 3 = 17

*Capricorn*

**Magic Square**

**Magic Pattern**

The pairs lie in alternate squares in alternate columns, and in squares symmetrically on either side of the vertical middle.

**Example**

12 + 5 = 17, 14 + 3 = 17

*Aquarius*

**Magic Square**

**Magic Pattern**

The pairs lie in alternate squares in alternate columns and in Knight’s moves.

**Example**

1 + 16 = 17, 8 + 9 = 17

*Pisces*

**Magic Square**

**Magic Pattern**

The pairs lie in adjoining squares in adjacent columns, and in Knight’s moves.

**Example**

2 + 15 = 17, 8 + 9 = 17
