Magic Squares appeared in a Spanish manuscript around 1280. The manuscript described the astrological features attributed to Magic Squares.
Magic Squares were considered planetary. Each of the Ruling Planets: The Sun, The Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury, Venus & Mars were assigned their own particular Magic Square.
Each of the Magic Squares had an order, ranging from 3 x 3 to 9 x 9.
Incidentally, these Planets were also assigned a metal.
It was on a plate of each of these metals that the designated magic square was inscribed. These plates were used for a variety of rituals. For instance, a 3 x 3 Magic Square assigned to the planet Saturn had to be inscribed on a lead plate. When the Magic Square, metal and planet aligned, a positive effect occurred. For example, the above combination was said to help women during a difficult birth.
